Our office is at 610 Painter St, a few blocks off State Street, where the SEPTA Route 101 trolley still runs at street level through the middle of the borough. Media is the Delaware County seat. Fence work here splits two ways. Inside the borough it is tight blocks of Victorian twins and singles with narrow rear yards. Outside it you have Upper Providence, Nether Providence and Middletown townships, plus Swarthmore and Rose Valley, with Marple a little further north. Out there the lots are wider and the ground moves more.
Borough jobs are access jobs. Plenty of blocks have no driveway wide enough for a machine, and the rear alley is too narrow to bring one down either. We plan those differently. Posts get dug with a one-man auger or by hand, and panels get carried through the side yard instead of dropped in the back. The digging is slow. This is Piedmont ground, rocky clay sitting over shallow bedrock, and a post hole can find stone at eighteen inches.
Past the borough line the job changes again. Lots in Nether Providence and Rose Valley fall away toward Ridley Creek and Crum Creek, so a run of privacy fence has to be racked or stepped instead of set level. Properties backing onto the woods near Ridley Creek State Park and Tyler Arboretum put root systems in the post line. In the subdivisions off Providence Road and Baltimore Pike it is mostly pool barriers and pet fencing. Being the county seat puts commercial work on the list too: gate operators and access control for properties near the Delaware County Courthouse and along the Baltimore Pike corridor. Painter Street is close to all of it.
What we build in the borough and out in the townships
Houses on the borough blocks sit close together. The fence that suits them is usually low and open at the front with something solid behind it. A three or four foot cedar picket or a low aluminum panel keeps the front sightline intact, which matters on a street where every porch reads as part of the same row. Out back, six-foot board-on-board or shadowbox cedar handles a narrow yard without walling it in, because both styles let air and light through the gaps. Where a rear alley is shared we face the finished side out and hang the pedestrian gate on heavy strap hinges. An alley gate gets used every day, and cheap hinges sag inside a year.
Post setting is where Delaware County ground shows itself. We dig to roughly three feet so the footing sits below the regional frost line, then wet-set in concrete on a gravel base so water drains away from the post instead of sitting against it. Rock gets broken out rather than worked around. A hole cut short because of stone will lean on you later, so we finish the hole. On the sloped lots in Upper Providence and Nether Providence we decide up front whether a run gets racked to follow the grade or stepped in level sections, and that decision sets the post spacing before a single hole is dug. Every job starts with an 811 utility locate and a look at your survey pins.
Pool fencing runs on its own rules. The barrier has to be spaced so a small child cannot pass through it or climb it, and the gate has to be self-closing and self-latching with the latch set out of a child's reach. We hang the gate to swing away from the water. Commercial sites around Media are a different job. County offices and the light industrial properties off Baltimore Pike take 9-gauge or 6-gauge chain link, or ornamental steel panels with a gate operator and intercom entry. Work on State Street also has to be loaded and staged around the trolley tracks and the borough's parking. We settle that scheduling at the estimate.
Fencing considerations around Media
- Soil and frost: the ground under Delaware County is Piedmont, rocky clay over shallow bedrock. We dig posts to about three feet so footings sit below the frost line, and we break through rock instead of settling for a short hole.
- Terrain: a yard that falls toward Ridley Creek or Crum Creek needs the racked-versus-stepped call made before the first post goes in. Stepped panels leave a triangular gap along the bottom at every step, which matters if you own a small dog.
- Lots and access: borough blocks are narrow, with rear alleys and shared drives, so a lot of that work is hand-dug because no machine fits. On township lots in Middletown and Upper Providence we can usually get an auger on a skid steer to the fence line.
- HOA and permits: the older borough blocks answer to nobody, but newer township developments often have architectural review that sets height, material and which side faces the neighbor. Media borough and each surrounding township runs its own fence permit process. We check what applies to your parcel and pull what is required before we dig.

Media Fencing FAQs
My block has a rear alley and no driveway. Can you still get a fence in?
- Yes. Most of our borough work gets done without a machine. We stage material on the street with your neighbors in mind, carry panels through the side yard, and dig the posts with a one-man auger or by hand. It runs slower than a township job and we quote it that way. When we come out to measure, tell us the alley width and whether the drive is shared.
We just put a pool in at our place in Middletown Township. What does the fence have to do?
- A pool barrier comes down to the spacing and the gate hardware. Pickets or panels have to be set so a small child cannot pass through or climb them. The gate has to be self-closing and self-latching with the latch out of reach, and we hang pool gates to swing away from the water. Aluminum panel is the common choice on township lots around here. We confirm the current barrier requirement with your township before we order material.
Our yard in Nether Providence drops toward the creek. Will a privacy fence look crooked?
- Not if it is laid out for the grade. On a fall like that we either rack the panels so the rails follow the ground, or step them in level sections with a drop at each post. Racking looks cleaner and leaves no gap underneath. Stepping suits a steeper fall and rigid panels that will not flex. We walk the line with you and settle it before anything gets dug.
We manage a commercial property off Baltimore Pike. Do you handle the gate and entry system too?
- Yes. We install, repair and replace commercial and industrial fence, and we do gate installation, gate repair and gate replacement alongside it. That covers automatic gates, gate operators, intercoms and gate security systems. On a site with steady tenant or staff traffic we size the operator to the gate weight and the duty cycle it will actually see. Call the Painter Street office and we will come out and look at the entrance.
Our fence is original to the house and half of it has rotted. Repair or replace?
- It comes down to the posts. If the posts are sound and set deep, we can replace rails and pickets and match the existing profile. That matters on a borough block where your fence sits in the same sightline as four neighbors. If the posts have rotted at the ground line, replacing the whole thing costs less in the end. We do both, so we will tell you which one your fence needs.
